International Youth Day – East African Community

August, 2022 – Arusha
All participants from the seven’s East African Community countries. Discussion and reflexion on the situation of youth in the community.

Established by its founding treaty on November 30, 1999, the EAC is a regional intergovernmental organization comprising seven East African states; the United Republic of Tanzania, the Republics of Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (the last state to join in April 2022).

This organization has a population of 300 million, a surface area of 4.8 million km2 and a Gross Domestic Product of 240 billion US dollars. Since its creation, it has been guided by four founding pillars: the customs union, the common market, the monetary union and a political federation.

The organization is composed of a summit, which brings together the seven EAC heads of state, a council of ministers, a secretariat and a court of justice. Its headquarters are in Arusha, Tanzania.

The day was placed under the sign of youth with the central theme: “Intergenerational Solidarity: Strengthening the commitment of youth in the integration process of the EAC“.

The event started by walk with music in Arusha town, around headquarters and entering the hall were the event was going to be held, one participant opened by prayer.

The day continued with a morning of exchanges and discussions on the economic situation of young people, children and adolescents in the EAC States. The interventions of the Secretary General of the EAC and the honorable president-judge of the Court of Justice of the EAC were particularly striking. Then the interventions of members of organizations or associations within the EAC such as Africa Youth Network, Sunrise Fundation of South Sudan or German Agency for International Cooperation allowed to understand the commitments on the ground of men and women who work for human rights.

This day allowed to sensitize the participants on the issue of hunger in East Africa and not only within the EAC States. The main objective was to raise the need for aid and support from the EAC to associations and foundations that fight for the education of youth, awareness of climate change, leadership and human rights.

More than a hundred people gathered in the EAC premises, coming from the seven East African States, this is a considerable awareness that must be supported and renewed during future international youth days.
